Abstract

Biology as one of the subjects taught in Senior High School (SMA) contains many concepts that must be mastered by students. Biology learning materials that often experience misconceptions include cell materials. Cell material is one of the biological materials that contains many abstract concepts and objects, this makes it difficult for students to understand concepts. Misconceptions that occur in students are inseparable from the cause or source of concept inconsistency. The cause of misconceptions is caused by several sources, namely from students, teachers, textbooks used and how teachers teach. Therefore, the researcher conducted a study that aimed to analyze students' misconceptions about cell matter using a three-tier diagnostic test with open reasoning. The type of research used is quantitative descriptive research. The research was carried out on September 4 – 19, 2024. The sample taken was students of grade XI Science B total of 25 students. The data collection technique in this study uses interview and questionnaire techniques. The results of the study showed that misconceptions occurred with a percentage of misconception categories of 65.4%; the understanding category by 20.3%; and the category of not understanding concepts by 14.3%. The sub-concept that experienced the highest misconception category was the sub-concept of the chemical components that make up the cell with a percentage of 84% and the sub-concept that experienced the lowest misconception was the sub-concept of animal and plant cell organelles with a percentage of 39.1%.
